How to Start a Yoga Practice for Beginners
Sarah Handy | JUN 25, 2023

Yoga is a great way to improve flexibility, reduce stress, and increase strength. If you're new to yoga, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here are some tips for beginning your yoga practice:
There are many different styles of yoga, so it's important to find one that resonates with you. Look for local yoga studios or gyms that offer yoga classes. You can also find a variety of yoga videos online. Choose a beginner-level class or video to start with. I personally recommend Yoga with Adriene on YouTube for any students that may not be able to attend in-person classes.
You don't need a lot of expensive gear to start practicing yoga, but there are a few essentials. A yoga mat will provide a non-slip surface for your practice. Comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for movement is also important. Be sure to hydrate as well. Some yoga practitioners also use blocks, straps, blankets, or bolsters, depending on their practice. At Handy Yoga's studio, we can provide these to you if you don't have them, no questions asked. We have mats as well if you forget yours or are just curious about yoga.
Yoga can be challenging, so it's important to start slowly and gradually increase your practice. Don't push yourself too hard or try advanced poses before you're ready. Listen to your body and take breaks when you need to. There's no need to injure yourself trying to impress others. Your yoga is for you and connecting your mind, body, and spirit - not for anyone else.
One of the key elements of yoga is breathing. Focus on your breath during your practice, taking deep inhales and exhales. This will help you relax and stay centered. If you struggle to remember to breathe, try to only focus on your exhales rather than your inhales. Breaking it down to the smallest possible step will make it more of a habit.
Like any exercise, yoga requires consistency to see results. Try to practice at least once a week, or ideally, two to three times a week. This will help you build strength and flexibility over time. Yoga is also a fantastic way to stretch out your muscles on the days you're not doing cardio or strength training if those are part of your fitness routine.
Yoga is a journey, and it takes time to see progress. Don't get discouraged if you can't do a certain pose right away. Remember that everyone starts somewhere, and with practice, you'll get there.
Starting a yoga practice can be intimidating, but with these tips, you'll be on your way to a healthier, more centered you. Namaste!
